Apollo’s Cabinet

Founded at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2018 and based in London, Apollo’s Cabinet is an award-winning baroque ensemble known for their imaginative and theatrical approach to early music.  We are delighted to welcome them back to Inverurie for a second visit.

It is January 24, 1758‚ Frederick II is celebrating his 46th birthday – and we are invited! Musicians from the Royal Court Orchestra perform, and of course Johann Gottlieb Graun, who played music with Frederick when he was still crown prince, leads the orchestra on this special occasion. Works by Germany’s most gifted composers are being played, and didn’t the late Johann Sebastian Bach once consecrate a ‘musical offering’ to the king, in which he transformed a theme given to him by Frederick according to all the rules of his art? With Georg Philipp Telemann, echoes of the big wide world come from the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. But music isn’t everything: there’s dancing, laughter and play, as befits a royal party. And Frederick’s revered flute master and musical father figure Johann Joachim Quantz leads the celebrations as maître de plaisir.
Apollo’s Cabinet has won 1st Prize in the Utrecht Van Wassenaer Concours, 1st prize at the Royal Overseas League Ensemble Competition, 1st prize at the Musikfestspiele Potsdam lunchtime concert competition as well as 1st prize and audience prize of the SMADE Musica Antigua Estella competition with this programme.
